ABOUT AXEL

The Person Behind QX Consult

I am a warranted Mechanical Engineer from the University of Malta, with a focus on industrial and manufacturing topics. Prior to this, I studied at MCAST, completing a Higher Diploma in Plant Mechanical Engineering, which provided the foundations for my engineering career.

My approach to quality has been shaped by more than a decade working in highly regulated manufacturing environments, where quality is only one part of the operational challenge. Production demands, output volumes, changing priorities and on-time delivery all have to be managed alongside customer and quality requirements.

These interests give me a chance to switch off, experiment and create — usually with varying degrees of success.

Throughout my career, I have continued to develop beyond my engineering background, including Lean Six Sigma Black Belt training and Dale Carnegie’s Leadership Training for Managers, complementing my experience in quality management, auditing and continuous improvement.

Over time, I progressed into senior quality leadership as Site Quality Manager in currency printing, working closely with Operations and other functions as part of the site leadership team. This experience reinforced my belief that sustainable improvement cannot come from applying standards, procedures or improvement tools in isolation. Methods and standards provide structure, but they need to be applied with an understanding of operational reality.

While manufacturing has shaped much of my professional experience, through auditing organisations in different sectors I have seen the same fundamental principle apply more broadly: ineffective processes, recurring problems and weak ownership ultimately have a cost. The environment may change, but the importance of understanding problems properly, involving the right people and building effective processes does not.

When I founded QX Consult, I wanted to build it around these experiences and a simple but important principle: Quality Beyond Compliance.

Outside work, I enjoy experimenting in the kitchen, following football and taking on DIY and creative projects. I have always enjoyed understanding how things work and trying different approaches.

THE QX CONSULT PHILOSOPHY

What Quality Beyond Compliance Means

Build capability, not dependency

Sustainable improvement should strengthen the organisation's ability to solve problems, manage processes and continue improving after external support ends.

Involve the people closest to the process

The people doing the work often hold essential knowledge about how the process really operates. Their involvement is key to understanding problems and developing practical solutions.

Make quality improve business performance

Quality management should contribute to better processes, stronger performance and customer outcomes — not exist simply to demonstrate compliance.

Understand before applying tools

Improvement starts by understanding how work is actually performed, the pressures surrounding the process and the problem that needs to be solved. ISO standards, Lean principles and quality tools are means to improvement.

THE DIRECTION

Where QX Consult Is Heading

The ambition behind QX Consult is to help change how organisations view quality — moving beyond compliance and treating quality management as a practical business asset that supports stronger performance, capable people and sustainable growth.
